We are the first school ever to connect in a long-term missional partnership.
At USCO, our desire is for students to see, experience, and engage with God’s heart for the world, both locally and globally, and become passionate followers of Christ that seek to have an active part in God’s ushering of His kingdom to Earth for the rest of their lives. In the summer of 2015, school leaders began to discuss, pray, and explore the idea of a long-term partnership that the school could enter with another community.
In July 2016, the University School became the first school to ever join a long-term community to community partnership through Children’s HopeChest. Through this partnership, USCO is committed to walk alongside Tabitha Ministry in the Guatemala City dump community as they move through the Survive to Thrive to Succeed phases of development.
Founded in 2006 by Carol Bercian, Tabitha Ministry’s vision is to rescue and integrally restore the children of the Guatemala City dump community – both spiritually and physically in the name of Jesus. The ministry serves single mothers who “work” in the dump by collecting food and items to recycle. Previously these mothers were forced to bring their children into the dump each day with them, but through Tabitha, they can now drop off their children in a safe environment where they receive education, daily meals, and a physical representation of Jesus’ love for them.
Our First Trip To Tabitha
USCO’s first trip to Tabitha was in March, 2017. We plan to take a least one trip every school year.
The University School is the first school to ever join a long-term community to community partnership through Children’s HopeChest. Through this partnership, USCO is committed to walk alongside Tabitha Ministry as they move through the Survive to Thrive to Succeed phases of development. This partnership consists of the following components, all covered in prayer and the grace and hope of Jesus Christ:
- Child sponsorships
- Annual trips
- Development projects
In this first phase of partnership, USCO is involved through the following:
- USCO families sponsoring Tabitha children
- Each USCO grade level sponsoring a Tabitha child
- First trip to Tabitha scheduled for Spring Break 2017
- Consistent prayer for Tabitha in USCO classes, chapels, and events
- School coffee shop (Tabitha Coffee) proceeds support the partnership
To rescue and integrally restore
the children––both spiritually
and physically in the name of Jesus
To preach the gospel and teach the powerful Word of God to transform and change the lives of the Guatemalan children through faith in Jesus Christ. Even though the circumstances around them don’t change, the most important thing is that they have Jesus. Through Him, they can have faith and hope to leave the darkness and live in His marvelous light.
Tabitha Ministry provides children with a high-level education, which gives them more opportunities in life. This gift of education shows these underprivileged children the love of Jesus in a tangible way.
The Celebration of this 10 year partnership
On September 15th, 2016 the University School officially launched a long-term partnership through Children’s HopeChest with the Tabitha Ministry in Guatemala City. It was an amazing night of worship, prayer, and casting vision for this new chapter in the stories of USCO and Tabitha Ministry. We had over 70 children sponsored during this Launch event!
